Tech Chasing an IT bug.

Last June my PC showed signs that it was dying. Don't know why. It was only 10+ years old, but maybe they're like dogs and age fast. Not wanting to waste money on a PC that would probably crap out as soon as I tried to fix it I lashed out and bought myself a very nice HP Desktop.

Problem 1 - A small keyboard. I like larger keyboards because I have large hands.
Problem 2 - I type a lot and I found that on this keyboard I was missing characters when I types. Not hitting the keys hard enough I thought. Considered this and bought a big cheap keyboard to replace the little one.
Problem 3 - The missing characters persist. I finally got irritated enough to decide to resolve the problem.

I hopped online and posed my problem as a question. Answers came back, indicating that other people had had the same problem that HP had resolved for them. Contacted HP.

They didn't concede that it was a known problem but they did arrange for me to download 2 updated drivers and an updated BIOS. I installed these. (With much abuse at the BIOS when it lost my PIN and I had to reset it.)

Keyboard works well and I was prepared to tick off the problem as solved BUT:

My brother lent me a hard drive which contained his library of music. Hundreds of directories. He wanted a list of his music in a spreadsheet so he could check out what he had more easily.

Not a problem, I told him.
I went to the top folder and initiated the Windows Powershell.
I entered DIR /S /B > Music.txt
A standard way of listing all sub-directories and files.
Powershell said "Can't find directory Music\S"
Notice the change from / to \.
Bitched to HP when they called back about the keyboard issue, considering this part of the issue.
No, no, they cried. That's a Microsoft problem. Contact them.
No, no, Microsoft cried. That's an HP problem. Contact them.
(The old never admit a bug is your problem. Been there before.)
Tested DIR /S /B > Music.txt on my PC again - still NBG.
Tested it on my brothers HP PC. Still NBG.
Tested it on my brothers old non HP PC. Works fine.

So we have a bug that is only there when you're on an HP machine and HP are raising the drawbridge and dropping the portcullis. Bastards.

If any of you care to test that Powershell Command for yourself feel free to do so and let me know the result, HP versus non HP.
If you don't know how to initiate POWERSHELL use SHIFT and Right Click on the folder you want to interrogate. Powershell is one of the options provided.

Powershell uses the forward and backward slashes interchangeably and thinks you are talking about a file path, not a command switch. This is different from DOS.

Use DIR -s instead.

Thank you. That works. Now the big question is why didn't HP tell me that?
And all those sites that say use /s are now wrong.

One answer is that HP tier 1 tech support people don't know jack about PowerShell since their last job probably was working the counter at McDonalds and the answer to your question isn't in the online knowledge base of canned answers they are looking at.

Another is that PowerShell has always used the dash as an argument delimiter to match Unix variant standards, but I think if you are in a command shell window and call a PowerShell script that accepts arguments you can use the slash, like this:

MyCoolScript.ps1 /FirstArgument /SecondArgument

The PowerShell script should parse the arguments by reference then if you enumerate them in the script.

If you hate the HP keyboard you may find some of the Logitech keyboards more to your liking. The smaller Dell keyboard I got on one workstation years ago drove me crazy with the layout, and I happened to have a spare older Logitech at home I brought in and was a lot happier with it. When that one died I was able to find another model at Best Buy that had a similar layout.

I'll probably do that. I've used Logitech before and they're quite good.
My only complaint is that the characters wear off the keys. (I type a lot.)
