823 years? Hah! This happens almost every year, and sometimes a couple of times a year.

Every year has 7 months with 31 days. Each of these months has at least three weekdays that happen five times during the month. The first 3 weekdays of any 31-day month are repeated 5 times within that month. So, any month that has 31 days and begins on a Saturday will have five Saturdays, five Sundays, and five Mondays.

He MAY be talking about a 31 day month that STARTS on a Saturday. With leap years and it having to be the month or December, it may take 823 years.. I haven't looked it up, but it seems plausible.

Dec. 2007 and 2012 if you go by only Dec standards. Much more often if you include other months in the mix

Totally wrong. This sort of nonsense gets trotted out fairly regularly but actually there is only a fourteen year cycle in the calendar. That's why you can get a universal calendar that's good forever.

In general the calendar repeats in a 28-year cycle — each month usually starts one day of the week later than the preceding year, except the 12 months following a leap-day start a day late, and the combination of 7-day week and quadrennial leap-years create the 28-year cycle (except century years not divisible by 400, like year 1900, which didn’t have a leap year). Within each cycle, the day of the week that starts a particular month occurs 4 times. For December to have 5 Saturdays, it must start on Thursday or Friday or Saturday; in each cycle this condition is met 12 times, so in the long run the probability of December having 5 Saturdays is 12/28=3/7 (with a small adjustment for the century anomaly).

Damn. I knew it was fourteen or twenty eight but couldn't remember which. so I took a guess. Any time I take a fifty/fifty guess I'm a 100% wrong.

This year repeats in 2029, last year repeats in 2023, but 2016 doesn't repeat till 2044, because it's a leap year. Of course, some holidays like Easter will be different.

Then you should look it up. Or, at the very least, think about it.

There are only seven days in a week. Each month must start on one of them. Whatever day a month starts on, the next year it will start on the following day, except for leap years, when it starts on the day after.
This is 2018. December starts on a Saturday.
December in 2019 starts on a Sunday.
In 2020, though, a leap year, December starts on a Tuesday.
2021, Wednesday; 2022, Thursday; 2023, Friday.
2024, However, since it's also a leap year, December will start on a Sunday.
Another leap year in 2028 means that December 2029 will start on a Saturday.
2029 is not 823 years away.

This is a good point. We can reuse old calendars because the pattern repeats. I think there's only about a dozen combinations.

The longest time for a year to repeat is 40 years. That happens when a leap year would have repeated in a century that is NOT a leap year, eg in 1900 or 2100. Only centuries in which the first two digits are divisible by four are leap years, which explains why 2000 was a leap year. There are actually 14 possible calendars, seven for ordinary years starting on Sun to Sat, and seven for leap years starting Sun to Sat.
